Education is the key to get those involved in helping children to recognize the true benefits that Chess has to offer our children not only in the area of education, but also within that child's life outside of school. This picture from the amazing A&E movie "Knights of the South Bronx" reminds us that education takes us places we never knew could exist. Approached the right way, Chess can provide for a child an experience which actually means something in relation to reality. After all, the best lessons in life are those that we can relate to.
The young man in this video below is inspirational. He's inspirational because of where he came from; a testament to the power and impact of Chess on lives that at one point may have seemed hopeless. I know that we can help At-Risk kids all over the United States and the world with more teachers like him.
Education is key to getting parents, administrators,
and teachers to recognize the true benefits of what chess has to offer our
At-Risk children in terms of academic, social, and intra-personal success. The
following video does a good job of capturing the importance of Chess in
education. Please note Frankie- the young man whose life was affected by Chess.
We can do this for many children.

This is an article that was written about Rocky River's first chess trophy involving competition. The kids were proud and, of course, so was I. What is interesting for me is that the children that were involved in the Chess program at Rocky River were kids that needed a place to fit in and this was their sanctuary. Millions of children seek it.

When we begin to utilize Chess to help children help themselves to make "better moves" in life, we will know that we have helped them successfully along their journey. I truly believe that we can do this by using the appropriate language that makes sense to the children in relation to Chess itself.
Eugene Brown CEO and founder of Big Chair Chess Club is yet another example of Chess saving someone's life. Eugene spent a great deal of time in prison for some senseless acts when he was a young man. While in prison, he found Chess. Eugene recognized the impact that Chess had on him and when he got out of prison he began to teach inner-city young men and women to "Think B-4 you move." His story is very inspirational and if you ever get a chance to watch the movie "Life of a King," you will have a greater appreciation for not only Eugene Brown, but for the significant impact Chess can make on the children that come into contact with it.
